Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?

Country-level accuracy is generally very high (95 %+). City-level accuracy varies — it's usually within 50 km for residential ISPs but can be off by hundreds of kilometres for corporate VPNs, cloud providers, and mobile networks, which announce IP blocks registered at their headquarters rather than actual usage location.

What is an ASN?

An Autonomous System Number (ASN) identifies a network operator — an ISP, cloud provider, or large enterprise — that controls a block of IP addresses and exchanges routing information with other networks via BGP. For example, Google's primary ASN is AS15169 and Amazon AWS is AS16509.

Why does my IP show the wrong city or country?

Geolocation databases map IPs based on registry data and observed routing, not physical location. Common causes of mismatch: using a VPN or proxy (shows exit node location), corporate network (shows HQ city), or a mobile carrier that assigns IPs centrally. The data reflects where the IP block is registered, not where the device physically is.

Can I look up my own IP address?

Yes — leave the input blank or enter me and the tool will detect and look up the IP your request comes from.
